Thyroidectomy

A thyroid lobectomy is the excision of one side of the thyroid gland while the total thyroidectomy is the removal of the entire thyroid gland. The extent of the procedure depends on the indication for surgery. If the entire thyroid has been removed, the patient will be prescribed hormone replacement medication to substitute for the gland.

Parathyroidectomy

Parathyroid glands are glands the size of rice that secrete the parathyroid hormone (PTH). The parathyroid hormone modulates calcium levels in the body. Hyperparathyroidism causes the parathyroid glands to increase in size and secrete too much PTH. Increased levels of PTH raise blood calcium levels. Dangerously high levels of calcium in the blood weaken bones, stimulate the production of kidney stones and interfere with heart and brain health.

Pre-operative diagnostic imaging tests are essential to locate the overactive parathyroid gland(s). Thereafter Dr Singh performs a parathyroidectomy to remove the affected gland(s).
