Colon disorders

Colon cancer

Colon cancer usually starts as small benign growths called polyps that develop in the colon. Although mostly benign, a few of these polyps can turn malignant. It’s vital to start screening for cancer before polyps turn cancerous.

Symptoms of colon cancer
A change in bowel movement is usually a sign of colon cancer. Other signs of colon cancer include:
  • Chronic diarrhoea or constipation
  • Traces of blood in the stool
  • Fatigue
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weight loss
Reasons for colon cancer
Colon cancer derives from healthy cells that mutate and become cancerous. As a result of DNA damage, cells divide and collect to form a tumour. Genetic history of colon polyps and colon cancer is a factor that increases the risk of the disease.
Colon cancer treatment
Treatment depends on the grade of colon cancer. Dr Singh performs a colonoscopy to remove small localised malignant colon polyps. The surgeon will need to remove a portion of the colon for larger tumours.

Diverticular disease

Diverticulitis is a severe condition of the digestive tract. Diverticula are supple sacs that form along the digestive tract lining. Diverticulitis arises when diverticula become infected. Infection is due to a blockage of digested food or faeces.

Symptoms of diverticulitis
Signs of diverticulitis include:
  • Abdominal pain
  • Chronic diarrhoea or constipation
  • Abdominal bloating
Reasons for diverticulitis
Diverticula form when weak regions in the abdominal wall protrude. Genetics, a family history of diverticular disease and environmental factors increase the risk of the disease.
Diverticulitis treatment
Treatment depends on the severity of diverticulitis. The doctor prescribes pain medication and antibiotics in the case of infection to treat the condition. Should an abscess form, Dr Singh will insert a needle through the abdomen to drain the pus. Surgery is necessary if the infection is severe and requires possible removal of the infected parts of the colon.
